Archives Research Procedure
Plot Plan Research Procedure:
The Division of Building Inspection records consist of building permit files only. The records date back to 1926. Although not all files contain Plot Plans, most permit files for new structures or additions built after 1928 do contain plot plans. We do not have files or plot plans for vacant lots, or structures built prior to 1926.
The Plot Plans are on file with the Building Permits for those structures, and are filed by the Property Owner’s last name. Plot Plans for buildings constructed after 1988 can be researched on the Public Access computer located in our lobby on a first come first served basis. Plot Plans for buildings built between 1928-1988 will require a card file search by Building Inspection Division Personnel. In order to conduct this search for you, we will require that you provide us with:
• All of the previous Property Owner names. You can find Property Owner last names by starting in the Assessor’s Office (first floor), and by researching the Deed to the property in the Town Vault (basement).
• The Property address and Section of Town specifically, i.e. 23 View Street in the Byram section of Greenwich.
• It is also helpful if you have the lot number. You will find the lot number on the field card that you obtain from the Assessor’s office.
Once we have this information from you, we will provide you with any Building Permit numbers that we have on file. You will record those Permit numbers and take them to the record room where one of our staff will pull the file (it may be microfiche) for you to research to see if there was a Plot Plan included with the Building Permit when it was filed. You are welcome to make copies of the files. Files may be copied at $0.25 per page, and microfiche may be copied at $1.00 per page. You will need to have your own change, as we cannot make change for you.
